Julie Châteauvert (PhD Études et pratiques des arts, UQAM) arrive à l’enseignement universitaire dans la foulée d’un parcours qui croise engagement militant, pratique artistique et démarche de recherche. Ses travaux de recherche en cours s’intéressent au sens politique que prend aujourd’hui l’autogestion et aux formes démocratiques horizontales expérimentées dans les OBNL et coopératives ainsi que dans les collectifs militants et artistiques. Elle s’intéresse aux rapports de pouvoir dans les organisations dans une perspective féministe et aux approches qui visent à les transformer : pratiques de facilitation, accompagnement organisationnel et également, plus largement, pédagogies émancipatrices. Curieuse des méthodologies participatives ou de recherche-création, ses projets l’amènent régulièrement à fabriquer divers stratagèmes pour mener de la recherche collectivement (ce qui ne l’empêche pas d’accompagner avec plaisir des étudiants et étudiantes de cycles supérieurs qui adoptent des méthodologies qualitatives traditionnelles).
Julie Châteauvert est membre du comité de gestion de l’Atelier d’innovation sociale Mauril-Bélanger et des conseils d’administration de Réseau-Coop et de Spill Propagation.
Elle est aussi artiste en art numérique.

Translating the Intermedial, Remixing the Flying Words Project
A new iteration in development of a research-creation project begun in 2000. Its general objective, in terms of social innovation, is to contribute to countering the marginalization of Sign Languages, to build spaces of
solidarity, and to erode both structural and imaginative barriers. One of the avenues being explored focuses on narrative creation and the majority-minority relationship at play within it. In this case, the focus is on refining our capacities for receiving works. The exploratory terrain involves the remediation of a work created in American Sign Language by the Flying Words Project (Peter Cook and Kenny Lerner) into an immersive virtual reality environment. The project involves an international team that also includes Vrac Collectif (Jean-François Jégo and Judith Guez) as well as Yorgos Tsampounaris. It also receives support from several institutions and laboratories, including the Cyberpsy Laboratory (UQO), with the support of Stéphane Bouchard, as well as INREV and the ArTec laboratory of excellence at Université Paris 8.
This project received financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts as well as support from ARTec
and INREV (Université Paris 8), LAVI (UQAM), EventLab at the University of Barcelona, and several institutional
and artistic partners.
Organizational Transformation: A Research-Creation Approach
A study of the transformation of self-management practices from 1980 to today, focusing on the case of
artist-run centres in Canada. At the turn of the 1980s, an entire network of artist-run centres took shape across Canada. One of its organizing principles was control over mission and management by the artists involved. Between the 1980s and today, these artist-run centres have had to adapt to numerous transformations in their environment, particularly with respect to funding models. This research project aims to understand and describe the effects of these transformations on their organizational functioning. What has become of self-management in self-managed artist-run centres?
This project received financial support from SSHRC – Insight Development Grants program.
From Post-Capitalist Political Economy to Utopia — An Encounter Between Social Science Research and Artistic Practices
A project bringing together six artists and six social science researchers committed to imagining the possible forms of post-capitalist societies. A research-creation residency is currently in preparation. In collaboration
with Est-Nord-Est and Revue Liberté, Art et politique.
This project received financial support from SSHRC – Connection Grants program.
